Stay: Glen Oaks, Big Sur

The quest for a place to stay in Big Sur can usually be defined by two extremes – the glamorous and opulent route via luxury resorts like the Post Ranch Inn or the Ventana, or option two – a tent. While we’re tempted to keep our latest stay a secret, we also believe in good karma so we’ll dish – tucked away amongst the towering redwoods lies Glen Oaks, a modern boutique hotel that proves the perfectly affordable and beautiful balance.

One side of the highway houses the Glen Oaks Adobe Motor Lodges. These eco-friendly lodgings combine original adobe walls with rustic-modern decor by designed by Steve Justrich. Each unit is complete with gas fireplaces and cozy private patios. Did we mention the heated floors in the bathroom? (A game-changer on cold mornings).

The other side of the highway, however, boasts the true diamond in the rough – the magical Glen Oaks redwood grove of private cottages and cabins. Driving down the dark, pine-covered dirt road shadowed by towering redwoods feels much like being transported into a fairytale. The cabins are just far enough apart for solitude and come equipped with the bare essentials – hot oatmeal and coffee for the morning, while complimentary s’mores kits ensure you’ll be spending some quality time cozying up to your private outdoor fire pit. These cabins book up fast, most notably the Big Sur Cabin with its famous twin claw foot tubs, set for a a dreamy soak beneath the stars.

With the Big Sur Roadhouse restaurant just a stones throw away, rest assured that everything you’ll need is right here in the woods. Fill up on delicious, local seasonal fare and finally, retire to bed underneath your wool Pendleton blanket as you soak in the smell of the surrounding redwoods.
